Appearance:

  • Fittonia plants have small, oval leaves with intricate patterns of veins in contrasting colors. The veins can be white, pink, red, or silver, depending on the variety.
  • The plant typically grows low to the ground and forms a dense, spreading mat.

Care Tips:

  1. Light: Fittonia plants thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate lower light conditions but will have more vibrant foliage coloration in medium to bright, filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

  2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Fittonias prefer to be kept consistently hydrated, but they are sensitive to overwatering. Water when the top inch (2.5 cm) of the soil feels slightly dry to the touch.

  3. Humidity: Fittonias appreciate high humidity levels. Misting the leaves, using a humidity tray, or placing a room humidifier nearby can help maintain suitable humidity, especially in dry indoor conditions.

  4. Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C). Fittonias are sensitive to temperature extremes and should be protected from drafts and cold temperatures.

  5. Soil: Plant your Fittonia in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with good aeration.

  6. Fertilization: Feed your plant with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or eliminate fertilization during the winter months when growth slows down.

  7. Pruning: Prune your Fittonia as needed to control its size and shape. Trimming back leggy stems can encourage bushier growth.

  8. Propagation: Fittonia plants are easily propagated from stem cuttings. Take cuttings with at least one node and plant them in a separate pot. Ensure that the cuttings have good contact with the soil and keep them consistently moist until they establish roots.
